Most calendars assume a single year lasts exactly 365 days. However, Earth's physical journey around the sun—known as a tropical or solar year—actually takes approximately 365.24219 days (or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds).
Because of this fractional discrepancy, if we ignored the extra ~0.2422 of a day, the calendar would slip out of alignment with the actual physical position of the Earth in orbit by 1 day every 4 years. Over a century, the seasons would shift by nearly 25 days! In a matter of centuries, Northern Hemisphere winter would occur in July.

A simple rule of adding a leap year every 4 years would make the year 365.25 days long—slightly too long by about 11 minutes. To fix this, the Gregorian Calendar dictates that a year is a leap year only if it is divisible by 4, except for century years which must be divisible by 400. Thus, 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 and 2100 are not.
How Leap Days Impact Age Calculations
When software developers, legal authorities, and calendar databases compute your age, leap years introduce interesting mathematical anomalies:
1. The "Total Days Alive" Shift
If you compare two people who are both exactly 20 calendar years old, their total days lived can differ based on which leap years occurred during their lifetime. A person born in 1996 will have lived through more leap days by age 20 than a person born in 1982.
2. The Millennium Leap Year Bonus
If you lived through the year 2000, you experienced a century leap day that only occurs once every 400 years. This extra day added 24 bonus hours to your chronological lifespan compared to centuries where the century year was skipped.
The Legal Puzzle of February 29th Birthdays
For the approximately 5 million people worldwide born on a leap day (commonly called leaplings or leapers), non-leap years raise a legal question: on which date do they officially turn a year older?
Different jurisdictions handle this differently:
- United Kingdom & Hong Kong: Legally, leaplings reach their next age on March 1st in non-leap years.
- New Zealand & Taiwan: Leaplings legally age up on February 28th in non-leap years.
- United States: Statutes vary by state, but March 1st is the standard legal baseline for turning 18 or 21.
How Software Systems Handle February 29th
Software developers must handle leap years carefully to avoid bugs. Common pitfalls include:
- Adding exactly 1 year to February 29, 2024, in JavaScript (`date.setFullYear(date.getFullYear() + 1)`) automatically shifts the date to March 1, 2025.
- Database queries that look for birthdays on February 29th must explicitly include February 28th or March 1st in non-leap years to avoid missing users in systems.
- Many servers experience crashes if they run code that assumes February has only 28 days every year, a historic bug that occurred in major systems in 2012, 2016, and 2020.
